Case Study: Automatic Swing Fire Door Automation

Elite Entrance Systems recently automated an internal swing fire door, improving accessibility while maintaining safe and controlled operation within the building.

The project involved installing a DFA low-energy swing door operator with a slide arm, together with safety scanners and activation sensors to provide reliable automatic operation for building users.

The new operator assists the door opening and closing cycle, while the activation sensors allow the door to open automatically when required. Flat safety scanners monitor the area around the door to help detect pedestrians and prevent the door from operating if an obstruction is present.

Following installation, the system was configured, tested and commissioned to ensure the door operated smoothly and that all activation and safety devices responded correctly.

Scope of works

  • Supply and installation of a DFA low-energy swing door operator
  • Installation of slide arm mechanism
  • Installation of flat safety scanners
  • Installation of automatic activation sensors
  • System configuration, testing and commissioning

Outcome

The completed installation improves accessibility through the doorway while supporting its continued use as a fire door.

The DFA operator provides controlled automatic opening, while the activation sensors make access easier for staff and visitors. Flat safety scanners monitor the area around the door to help prevent movement when a person or obstruction is detected.

Once activated, the door completes a controlled closing cycle, helping it return to its closed position after use. This is particularly important for a fire door, which must not be left standing open unless it is connected to an appropriate approved hold-open system.

Elite Entrance Systems installs, upgrades and maintains automatic swing door systems for commercial, healthcare, education and public sector buildings across the UK.
